The original home of the golden visa — since 2012

The Global Leader in Golden Visas

Since 2012, La Vida has guided investors from over 160 countries through the world’s leading golden visa and investment migration programs.

What is a Golden Visa?

A golden visa is any government program that grants residency or citizenship in exchange for qualifying investment — whether that’s European residency, Caribbean citizenship, or a second passport anywhere in the world. It is the definitive umbrella term for the global investment migration industry: a dynamic, government-backed category that gives internationally minded investors and their families the ability to secure residency rights, full citizenship, or specialized investor status in exchange for capital invested in that country. La Vida has guided investors from over 160 countries through more than 18 of the world’s leading programs — and goldenvisas.com, established in 2012 when the golden visa first entered the world’s vocabulary, is the longest-running website dedicated to this space.

Golden Visa, Residency by Investment or Citizenship by Investment – Which Is Right for You?

At La Vida, we define the Golden Visa ecosystem as encompassing three core pillars – because the opportunity available to investors extends well beyond any single program type or region:

Residency by Investment (RBI): Long-term residence permits granting the right to live, work, and study in a host country, typically with a pathway to permanent residency and eventual citizenship. Portugal and Greece are the most established European examples.

Citizenship by Investment (CBI): Direct citizenship programs that confer a second passport and full citizenship rights, typically without any prior residency requirement, and often within months. The Caribbean’s five established programs are the global benchmark.

Entrepreneur & Talent Visas: Specialist routes for founders, remote earners, and high-value individuals, including start-up visas, digital nomad permits, and merit-based citizenship programs such as Malta’s citizenship by exceptional contribution and Canada’s Start-Up Visa.

Why La Vida?

Specializing in investment migration since 2012, La Vida was one of the first firms in the world to recognize the golden visa as a distinct and growing category of investment opportunity — and to build a practice dedicated entirely to it. Our team of advisors has since guided more than 120,000 prospective investors across 164 countries, helping families and individuals secure the residency rights, second citizenship, and global mobility that matter most to them. La Vida’s growth reflects both the extraordinary rise of investment migration as an asset class and the trust our clients place in us: we are the only firm in our sector to have featured in the Financial Times Fastest-Growing Companies list for five consecutive years.

Golden Visa FAQs

How much is a golden visa?

Each country sets its own investment level and fees for the golden visa program it offers. The two lowest price programs both launched in 2025 are São Tomé and PríncipeNauru starting at $90,000 and $105,000 plus fees. The most expensive are major countries across the world including Canada, USA & New Zealand all upward of $800,000 although the benefits of each vary considerably. See our full golden visa pricing guide.

What investments qualify for a golden visa?

The investment can typically be into real estate, private equity, government infrastructure or business. Each golden visa program has its own rules for what qualifies based on what that government is targeting as a priority for inward investment. Some programs offer donation options as an alternative to investments in the private sector. That is money paid directly into a government fund with no return.

How can I apply for a golden visa?

The first step is to determine which program and country is most suitable for you and your family’s needs. There are a range of golden visa programs that offer residency through to citizenship. Once determined thereafter you need to make the required investment and submit the full application. Programs vary, some require investment first which essentially secures the residency. Others require application first which is approved after due diligence and before making the final investment. La Vida’s advisors guide you through every stage — from program selection to final approval. Book a free consultation to begin.

Which country offers the best golden visa in 2026?

The honest answer is “it depends on your priorities”. Best for European access, Malta and Portugal. Best for speed in 2026 are the newer programs offering citizenship including Nauru and Sao Tome. Best for passport strength, Malta. Best for combining price with passport strength and citizenship combined, the Caribbean programs. Grenada in particular is recommended by La Vida currently.  For tax purposes with residency, Italy and Malta. Most popular and best all-rounder, including lifestyle, Portugal.

Can my family be included in my golden visa application?

Yes, in every program it is possible to include spouse and dependent children. Some programs have minimal or no extra fees for this. With some country programs it is possible to include parents and even siblings. Often inclusion can depend on age and the definition of dependence.
