Guyana, with its emerging economy and vast untapped resources, beckons international high-net-worth investors seeking a second residence. Opportunities in energy, agriculture, and real estate hold promise for significant returns, while the country’s stunning natural landscapes and biodiversity provide a unique lifestyle. Though Guyana lacks a formal residency by investment program, the government is open to foreign investors.

Guyana Golden Visa

Guyana does not currently offer a golden visa or citizenship by investment programme similar to those offered by some other countries. Such golden passport programmes often allow individuals to obtain citizenship or residency rights through substantial investment, typically in real estate, national development funds, or local businesses. Traditionally, Guyana has been a net exporter of migrants. Over the years, a significant portion of the Guyanese population has emigrated and opportunities are open to Guyanans looking to invest abroad for residency or even citizenship. Such programmes are popular in Europe in countries such as Greece and Hungary and citizenship by investment is a feature of several Caribbean countries like Dominica and Grenada.

Guyana Residency and Citizenship

Guyana also offers no formal residency by investment scheme. Some have speculated that it may offer some form of investment programme in the future, due to recent oil production generating interest in the country and its economy. The country does, however, offer a work permit to investors for up to five years.

Guyana Passport Strength and Ranking

Guyana has a relatively weak passport, thereby making it a difficult choice for investors even if it were to adopt a citizenship by investment programme. The Guyanese passport allows visa-free access to 99 countries, accounting for 28.1% of worldwide travel, and allowing access to just 18.2% of the world’s wealth (measured in GDP). It ranks 117th on La Vida’s comprehensive Global Passport Ranking and is one of the lowest ranking South American passports.
