A chain of over 1,200 islands makes up The Maldives. This republic offers a unique opportunity for foreign investors seeking a second residence. With its stunning natural beauty, stable political environment, and investor-friendly policies, the Maldives is an attractive destination. The country’s special economic zones and favorable tax regulations make it an enticing prospect for those looking to invest and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle in a tropical paradise. However, it’s essential to navigate the complex regulatory framework and consider the environmental challenges posed by rising sea levels, due to its very low height above sea-level.

Maldives Citizenship by Investment

The Maldives does not currently offer a golden visa or citizenship by investment programme comparable to those offered by some other countries. Such golden visa programmes often allow individuals to obtain citizenship or residency rights through substantial investment, typically in real estate, national development funds, or local businesses.

Residency in the Maldives

The Maldives also do not have a formal permanent residence by investment programme. They do, however, have other residence programmes.

Corporate Residence Visa

This program was introduced to seek high net-worth individuals. The visa is applicable to those who invest $50 million or more into the Maldives, those who maintain a deposit of $1 million at a Maldivian bank for over two years, or those who invest over $1 million into real estate in the Maldives via government-approved projects. It promises streamlined services during their time in the Maldives.

Maldives Passport Strength and Ranking

The Maldivian passport offers access to just 99 countries worldwide. This means that it offers access to just 28.8% of global travel, and 21.2% of world wealth (GDP). Ranking at 113th on La Vida’s comprehensive Global Passport Ranking, it is one of the weaker passports. Consequently, even if it were to offer a citizenship by investment route, it would not be so attractive an option for investors looking for a strong second passport.
